L'histoire institutionnelle des anciens Pays-Bas connaît depuis quelques années un regain d'intérêt notoire. Si les études consacrées aux instances gouvernementales centrales se multiplient, certaines institutions "secondaires" n'ont pas encore fait l'objet d'une étude systématique. Tel était le cas de la charge d'audencier et premier secrétaire. Figure centrale du travail administratif, l'audencier témoigne sans conteste de la complexité et des mutations successives du système décisionnel en vigueur dans les anciens Pays-Bas. Cette étude se propose de retracer la naissance, la structuration, le fonctionnement et la suppression de cette charge transposée dans nos régions par les ducs de Bourgogne et qui marqua le paysage institutionnel de nos régions pendant plus de trois siècles. Sa responsabilité à l'égard de la recette des droits de sceaux, sa présence dans les divers conseils de gouvernement ou encore les missions diplomatiques qu'il exerça pour certains souverains, expliquent la diversité des sources consultées afin d'offrir une vision globale de l'emploi. Dépassant l'approche institutionnelle rigide, cet ouvrage aborde la dimension socioprofessionnelle du personnel qui desservit cet emploi. La vénalité, le népotisme et le cumul des fonctions transparaissent au travers des dynasties qui, véritablement, s'installèrent à la tête de ce département. Par cette étude, c'est tout un pan de l'histoire institutionnelle trop souvent délaissée qui est mis à l'honneur : celui du travail administratif nécessaire au bon fonctionnement de l'État.
